Step in Construction Project Management

Each footstep contributes to achieve project goal in the construction project management. The goal of every owner and subcontractor is to make or complete their project on schedule and within budget. For a successful subcontractor, he knows very well or understands the method of construction. The process of construction project management contains an effective time management and the management of lots of activities. The subcontractor is not only liable for managing its activities additionally he also liable for acts of other contractors under its administration.

To get a successful project result there is a need of devotion and commitment from every team member. Every footstep in the process plays an important role in the project. If you want to manage a project effectively and with perfection you need to follow a four step process.
  • Create a project framework
  • Build-up a project plan (Scheduling)
  • Observation and Surveillance of the project plan (Monitoring)
  • Manage modification of the plan (Control)
Create a project framework –

First footstep in effectively managing a construction project is creating a project framework for implementing the tasks. In a construction project all small or big stages are very important to be identified, as they are all essential to complete the activity. Also, this process includes a schedule and cost management for every stage. All construction jobs must be identified and allocated to subcontractor, it is also important to recognize what is going to happen in the area of operation and what relevant tasks are not scheduled in a particular workspace. In this phase project price should be set by using various methods. Also in this phase, availability of equipment, material, labor and other construction tools must be planned carefully. If all stages of the project have been identified the project plan can be built.
Build-up the project plan (Scheduling)

The second step in effectively managing a construction project is building the project plan. The accurate project plan of the job activity is a very difficult feature of the construction management process. The project plan not only describes the job by activities, in fact it also involves contractors to identify what activities must be executed and when. In a successful construction project, the project plan turns into the project roadmap so that all contractors can evaluate and decide when their own work will be in the pipeline.
Observation and Surveillance of the project plan -

The third step in effectively managing a construction project is an observation and surveillance of the project plan. Project growth depends on scheduling, the subcontractor is liable to make sure the schedule is actively updated. After fixing the frequency of schedule updates, the prime contractor will direct all team members for updating their job activities. By updating information, if any of the tasks or assignments are not included in the schedule, they will be identified and the necessary actions will be taken accordingly.

Manage modification of plan -

The fourth step in effectively managing a construction project is managing modifications of the plan, those certainly arise in the project. Every change in the scheduling must be shared with all team members of the project. It must be recognized that the project finish date should not be changed by modifying schedule. If the project finish date is modified and it cannot be avoided then schedule expansion is necessary.

For a successful construction project, it is very necessary to include above four steps in project management. Without a proper and complete project framework, project plan, surveillance of project schedule and power of managing modification of plan, the project cannot achieve their goal.

Integrate, Implement, and Coordinate

Having a construction project in hand is not enough until the course of action is planned beforehand. There are many instances when full-fledged construction Companies have failed, not because of lack of projects, but because they were unable to manage the existing projects efficiently. Prior assembly of resources and coordination of activities becomes therefore essential. Three simple steps to instigate a thriving construction project include:

  1. Integrate: assimilation of resources is very essential in order to implement the plan of action of any construction project. The first step to begin the process of implementation includes integration of resources, because if the resources are not gathered efficiently at one place then it would become extremely difficult to execute the plan so prepared for accomplishing the project.
  2. Implement: the second step to put a thriving project into action is putting those resources into practice by effectively implementing them into the project. And what matters more is implementation as per requirement rather than implementation of resources alone. There happens many a times that the construction companies find it hard to utilize the resources properly because they are unaware of where to employ them.  Giving a prior thought to implementation of resources hence becomes very much needed.
  3. Coordinate: the very last step to accomplishing a flourishing construction project is establishing coordination so that the activities being carried out remain harmonized and issues concerning lack of coordination do not arise. Because most often lack of coordination proves to be the underlying factor behind letdown of good construction projects.

Failing to Plan Equals Planning to Fail

So much has been said and talked about the inevitable elements of construction industry. Various issues that need immediate attention have also been discussed. How important coordination and communication is, has been paid enough heed.

But have we understood the importance of planning yet? Have we taken into account the consequences we might face if prior planning is not done in the construction industry? Well, the topic itself speaks volumes – if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.

The importance and uses of planning are many, but a few significant ones are highlighted below:
  •     Project execution

Most of the time businesses fail to execute the construction project on time not because the idea lacked matter or they fell short of resources, but because somewhere their plans starting from the scheduling to the budgeting of the project were improper and not properly chalked out.
  •     Be prepared for contingencies
If you are planning things in your business, it doesn’t indicate that you are being skeptical about your business, it instead shows that you are not waiting for something to turn up out of the blue and hamper the progress of your project. You are planning things in advance so that you can confront the mishaps of any kind. Isn’t that a wise thing to do?
  •     You have a backup option

Planning means availability of alternatives at your fingertips. You can choose anytime, any option at your convenience. It implies that you will always have a back-up option with you. If plan A fails, you always have plan B. Move ahead with the alternatives.
  •     Strategic management

A plan is more of a map, a guide, a direction, a route, most importantly, a strategy. It lays a well-thought-about path in front of you on which your business just needs to walk upon. Your business can manage things in a strategic manner because you are not digging at random; you know exactly where you are going.

All the other project functions therefore fail at the very beginning if you are not paying heed to planning. Better to fasten your safety belt even before you start the engine of your construction project.
